Hi guys, going out to Mornington on Friday for some squid and pinkies hopefully.
Was wondering if it’s worth picking up some circle hooks for snapper to increase hook up rate? And if so what size would be ideal for the smaller ones u get frequently off the pier.
Also, squid jigs, 3.0 or 2.5? And what colours work the best, I’m gonna get a couple maybe natural red and black??
Any help appreciated, thanks!

Re: Circle hooks for snapper
I tried circle hooks a few years ago and went back the my ever faithful o'shaughnessy hooks that have worked for more than 45 years in what ever size suited the fish for the day and bait

Re: Circle hooks for snapper
If you like to "sit and forget" then go get circle hook. I personally like to "set" the hook.
4/0 for snapper, both circle/KL or octopus hook.
1/0 for pinkies.
Re squid jig colours, they all work, just gotta keep trying and changing to whichever that catches then stick with it. I'm no pro but that's how generally my approach.

Usually I have a few lines out, some I’m actively holding and some I’m not, maybe I’ll give them a go on the ones I’m leaving out but not actively holding?Sebb wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 8:10 amIf you like to "sit and forget" then go get circle hook. I personally like to "set" the hook.

Re: Circle hooks for snapper
What Sebb said about the circle hooks , Unless things have changed at Mornington in the last year or so? I'd say you would want to use a 1.8,2.5 sized jig as the squid there (at least on the inside of the pier ) are a bit on the small size.

Re: Circle hooks for snapper
I've tried circles but not happy with results, I use octopus 5/0 for snapper and drag set to around a 1 kg tightness and don't need to hook the fish, just wait for buckle and reel screens
