what are you trying to catch and roughly where would you be fishing?

What's your budget for gear?

If you're in Melbourne, this https://afn.com.au/product/landbased-port-phillip/ and/or it's Westernport Bay equivalent are invaluable.

My suggestion is to get these two books if your starting out in salt water, they are the very best when starting salt water.

Yep, get those.
In general, fish around high tide (2 hrs before and 2 hrs after). Sunrise sunset is always good.
Paternoster on a choppy day and rough bottom (eg weedy or broken ground), running sinker on a calm day and flat bottom (eg sand flat).
Hook size and bait depend on target fish.
Burley is always good, any type of burley.
Rod and reel depend on where you fish and what to fish.

Most important, have fun!
And good luck!
