Big Bully Mullet

Big Bull Mullet (Sea Mullet) can sometimes be the most frustrating fish to catch.

At one spot I go to they often hang out in shoals of 30 or 40 fish at a time but they steadfastly refuse a bait of any kind.

Early this evening one finally broke ranks and took a tiny piece of bread on a number 16 hook. Using just 4lb line this bad tempered mullet really pulled some string.

The photo is pretty crappy but it was dark and I was freezing . It was difficult to keep the camera from shaking.

The mullet is laid out along the rear step of my 4WD. At a rough guess close to 60cm.

Some good gummy and jewie bait!

Used to see big schools of these fishing the Werribee river years ago.
The water used to literally boil there were that many.
Never managed to catch one.
In hindsight, you could of almost ran a net across the surface to catch them.

Nice, that's a big mullet.
Yea I heard they're hard to catch.
I saw someone once got one in his bucket and he said took him hours trying to get the fish to bite, the fish was just hanging around. He caught it in the end but was a fail hook up.

Totally acceptable tablefare, especially fresh; just gotta be careful not to puncture the bile sack when cleaning them cos that messes **** up beyond salvage.

Not sure if this is the same fish as our sea mullet in NSW (Mugil cephalus), but if so, they make very acceptable smoked fish.
The only way I've ever caught one -apart from netting - is by accidentally foul hooking them.
