Weekend at Portland.
Quick report from the weekend just gone.
Headed down to Portland with a good mate of mine for our first crack at the Tuna. After much reading up, both on here and elsewhere, and asking a lot of questions, we set off 1.30 am Friday morning. After a slow drive down due the fog, we arrived in Portland a little before 7. Stopped for some breakfast, amd consulted John at Portland bait and tackle, (what a ripper bloke). He advised us that there were plenty of fush around, and that while the morning would be pretty sloppy, the chop would ease in the arvo. We got to the ramp, to find it very quiet surprisingly, so took our time, making sure we had everything right.
Headed off around Lawrence Rock in some fairly stiff chop on top of a couple of metres of swell, and as Dycky had suggested to us, got our pattern set up pretty much as we got to the rock. 20-30 minutes in, the tld 30 screamed, and 150mtrs of 24kg mono disappeared in seconds, and down it went into the dacron backing. wound the drag up, which didn't slow it down, amd a few seconds later, 'bang', the dacron parted, devastated lol.
Have to say, this was my fault, too excited, too rash in winding the drag up too quickly. reset, and off we went. 10 minutes later, one of the tld 25s screams into life, and after a short scrap, up comes our first school tuna, not a huge fish, but we were delighted. Reset the spread again, 30 minutes, one of the 20's goes off, another short battle, and up comes number 2 for the day,.stoked.
We wrapped up at that point, as the conditions weren't ideal, and we were both knackered, in need of a shower and some sleep.
Will write up day 2 a bit later today, along with a couple if photos..
