Tuna charter

Post by Wolly Bugger » Sat Feb 08, 2020 1:13 pm

Yesterday hopped a charter with the aim of catching a tuna,

Shortly after the lures were set in front of Cape Schnack we had a 4 way hook up, not tuna but Kingfish.
We went over a school of Kingfish which was sitting at about 15 metre level in 60 metres of water.
Lost count of how many we let go that were 59 - 58 cms,
This lasted for more than an hour of jigging, on one jig it was almost a kingfish every drop.
There were 6 on the charted an we managed 8 fish at about 62 cms.
This was early moning action, for the rest of the day zilcxh

Which charter?
Sounds like you had a great time.
One day I'll get my first king.

Nice work Wolly. Did you see any tuna out there?

I’d call that a success personally Wolly! Reckon I’d be much happier with that than school tuna. Barrels on the other hand, well...

Have you been getting down to Portland at all? Been wrestling any kingies down there this season mate?

Some advice offered by other experts on catching Kingfish, was to troll no faster than 3-4 km per hour or was that knots?
Anyway the first fish were caught on X raps at around 12 knots.
Some of the Xraps the charter ran, had seen better days, as most of there colouring had been worn off, yet they still caught fish.
3 of us were using jigs and one other a stick bait, which performed very well.
A trick I learnt was to tether a Kingfish on a line close to the boat.
We lost a few as well.
