I can't speak for landbased but off a boat flathead would have to be the most plentiful and easiest fish in ppb. Moving is the key drifting using bait , blades, soft plastics or hard bodies. The guys at work would often ask for flathead I would go out catch plenty bring into work and cook them up for lunch sending the apprentice out for chips.
I don't think they are in short supply but they are so tasty people will pay the dollars for them.

He can catch a few but not commercil quantities.
As for the average size getting smaller not I ppb but in westernport 10 years ago you wouldn't catch flathead now they are in plague proportions even in the deep

Even the beginner fisherman can launch at werrible south now and bag out on flathead...they are everywhere.

The average size is getting bigger imo....this year on most trips somebody on the boat caught a 55cm flathead and it wasnt uncommon to catch two or three 55 cm fish.

And to be fair they werent the main target, more just a added bonus.

Its great to see such nice size fish around cause I love eating them !!!

I'll take 35cm flatties all day long haha, but yeah, there are flatties everywhere these days, its great! Mind you, the small ones can get annoying as all hell. Plus, filleting millions of small flatties is a pita.
