Downrigger alternative for kayak
So I've been thinking to go trolling on my yak to Purrumbete or Bullen Merri and the preparation can be as fun as the fishing.
The lure needs to go deep enough, especially in warmer season.
So i need some tips from the pros or who have been/tried trolling on a yak there.
First, what is the best month of the year? Worth fishing there in summer? Trolling or no trolling.
And what's the best alternative to down rigger? To get the lure down deep to probably 10-15 meters. Most likely a tassie devil or the rapalas.
I was thinking to put a ball sinker and swivel/stopper or a teardrop sinker and long leader. Will get dragged but will get the lure deeper at least.

Re: Downrigger alternative for kayak
A mate of mine a few years ago got these weight things from the tackle shop that were spose to make the lure go deeper when trolling he had different sizes for different depths I can't remember if they worked or not, I usually just try and use diving lures

I think that's a clip weight, I saw it on a fishing TV show once.Fishomicko wrote:A mate of mine a few years ago got these weight things from the tackle shop that were spose to make the lure go deeper when trolling he had different sizes for different depths I can't remember if they worked or not, I usually just try and use diving lures
Most trout diving lures doesn't go deep to 10 metre.

I think the weights maybe called inline sinkers, google ‘inline sinkers’ and the results may help

Re: Downrigger alternative for kayak
Thanks, I'll look around.
Both of them attached permanently to the line, means to fight the fish with them dangling around, also stops at the rod tip with long leader still in the water, might be hard to get the fish closer to the yak.
I saw similar to diving sinkers in bcf, but made out of plastic.
I found the snap weight I saw on the TV show, it's also by Cabelas, wonder if anyone have tried it.

Re: Downrigger alternative for kayak
Recently been contemplating something similar for my boat to chase kingies. Been looking at the Alvey wide spool boat reels and think Im going to match it to a super short stiff sidecast boat rod and load it with 50-100lb mono, downrigger weight and quick release clip.

That's a good alternative. Not for kayak though.shazdoggg wrote:Recently been contemplating something similar for my boat to chase kingies.
