so basically like your second picture but you can change weights to suit depth

A few of the kayak guys have made up downriggers from cut down boat rods and large overheads for trolling on the lakes and a few other places. From memory it worked well and allowed them to pick their depth rather than guessing with sinkers etc.

ive heard they catch trout too.
i was going to give em a try oneday, along with the rmg poltergeist i think they dive to around 8.6m or similar.

i was trolling tassies and hard bodies back in spring time, only caught them early morn but the sounder seemed to be showing quite a few fish around the 12-15m depth, hard to know what they were but i thought next time it might be worth a try jigging with soft plastics or other jigs, i dont know about over here but in the u.s. they do quite a bit of deep water jigging for big lake trout.

I made and used a downrigger to fish up north offshore and it worked well - how ever the problem I had was getting out of the way of the fish fast enough
for trout in deep lakes it may be fine - I hooked ether a Spanish Mack or maybe a Wahoo and the speed it went around the down rigger cord I had no hope and the line was cut off - not the downrigger cord

some guys use an old Alvey reel with a star drag and lower by backing off the drag enough to control the down rigger weight dropping - and tighten the drag to hold the position ( depth ) some use multi coloured braid to guess the depth
I used a cheap Ebay lever drag reel using the drag again to lower the weight but the weight would drop in the sounder beam so I could set the depth watching the mark on the sounder - strangely the weight would move back out of the sounder beam once paddling clearing up the screen

last year I just used a sinker fixed to the line with a rubber band for the line I wonted to troll deeper all though I have toyed with giving a downrigger another try - it does work but is a bit more to manage when a fish is on --- hope that is some help

Thank you all, i might play around and try a few, see which one works.
Might wait for autumn though, a little too hot to troll for trout atm? Or worth trying?
