Apart from the obvious leader straight to a hardbody (and fly fishing), strike tiger nymph is proven to be deadly for trout streams.

Here's my alternative rig, having a split shot on a dropper. So if it's snaggy, good chance only the split shot is lost and not the whole rig and nymph. Put another split shot sinker and back to fishing.
I know in NZ, they use spin/overhead in lakes jigging with a fly (streamer fly or wooly bugger).

If you are able to walk the bank, mudeye or scrubby under a short dropper to a bubble float, drifting with the current can be deadly.
The Goulburn each side of Gilmours bridge at Thornton has ideal banks for this type of fishing.
Walking along watching the bubble drift downstream can produce some exciting takes.
My trout days are over but used to love this method.

I saw that, lol.

Never had much (or any luck from memory) drifting artificial bait for trout in a river or suspending under a float in a lake. But I've caught trout lure fishing strike tiger nymphs in a river.

Is it just me or is it a low strike rate type of fishing for trout? I always assumed it wasn't effective because they are too tuned in to what the real thing looks like.

What sorta bait? I only know mudeyes under a float for lakes in summer.
I'm guessing diff bait in diff time of year?
My trout fishing started with fly fishing years ago. Only recently picked up hardbodies and plastics in the last two seasons. Don't know or never tried other ways to fish them.

When I was taught to fly fish, I was told basically trout eats what's abundant at the time. Hence the match the hatch.
When we found it (happened to me few times on fly), it can be almost 90% hit rate.

Yes does vary, per the season's
Worms (of course), grasshopper, cricket, woodroache, yabby,grubs & other small creatures found in the area. Have caught a trout floating a huntsman on the surface.

When Grass hoppers and Crickets are plentiful , used to catch a couple of dozen and create a "false rise" - Using 6 - 7 foot light spinning rod and 4lb Mono ( Greased) Take a Grasshopper / Cricket and superglue a Size 16 or smaller to it's back with the barb pointing up. Hand cast 4 or 5 Grasshoppers / Crickets into slack backwater and hang on - Fish with bail arm open and Drag preset - Let fish run - Set hook when run stops - First strike will scare the ---- out of you - Crickets at night, no moon are deadly - Perfected technique on Goulburn River over 45 years ago - Still works.
