Winter fishing

I do the vast majority of my fishing in the Kyneton lakes and usually do quite well, but I usually hung up my fishing gear from about this time of year until mid-September. What is the fishing like over winter, especially in lakes? Where do people go? Are the rivers better than the lakes? Any answers/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My winter fishing :
Lake trouts (since trout rivers are closed Queen's bday )
Squids (they bite all year)
Aussie salmons off the surf/rocks or even piers
Occasionally breams
Lake trouts in winter can be aggressive as they're unable to spawn and smelting trouts can be easy to catch.
Go fish some squids and stock up for snapper bait in spring.
