Where to fish in walhalla
Where to fish in walhalla
Hey guys i don't really fresh water fish that much but I'm on holidays atm.
Staying at stringers cottage for a few days and want to know where to start fishing.
I know to follow upstream and be really careful as trout do get easily spooked.
I have live worms for bait and some lures.
Any advice would be much appreciated cheers

Thompson river? Not the greatest river in the world for fishing imo. I waded around 3km of it from around aberfeldy camp ground without any success. Apparently trout are in there, as you'd expect, but most models are very small. I think the monsters stay in the dam.

There's trout in the river there, mostly small, but season is closed, don't fish for trout in the river. You'll get fined, not worth it.
Maybe try the Thompson Dam. Not sure though.

You need to read the VFA fishing regulations!
It is currently closed season for trout meaning you cannot take or even attempt to take trout from streams. If you walk up Stringers Creek with trout tackle you may well get caught as there are fair numbers of government workers in the area who can report you.
At this time of year your best option at Walhalla is go down to the Thompson River on dark and target river blackfish with worms. A canoe is good as bank access is difficult. It is quiet this time of year but if you fish till after dark you may well get one.
Once the trout season opens again in September your strategy of walking upstream flicking spinners will work on the trout provided the stream is not too discoloured.
And don't drink any water out of Stringers Creek, you may get quite crook!
And DONT try fishing in Thompsom Dam as it is completely closed to fishing. There are officers in camoflage dress patrolling it daily, even being close to the water is illegal - stray bushwalkers have even been fined.

Was going to suggest Rawson lake but I don't believe it's stocked anymore.

Kimtown, the Aberfeldy camp ground is on the Aberfeldy River, not the Thomson. It is a smaller river and in that area quite warm in summer. I'd agree with your observations that in that area it is isn't a great trout fishery. Further upstream where it is cooler it is better.Kimtown wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2019 9:33 amThompson river? The Thomson is much bigger, gets releases from the Thomson dam and as a consequence is cooler. Between the Walhalla road bridge and the dam is a good trout fishery and it contains good numbers of blackfish with occasional fish up to 2 kg. It is difficult country to get into and best fished by canoe. Close to the dam the Narrows Road gives access.
The dam is off limits as it is part of the Melbourne water supply. In the past people used to sneek into and fish places like Thomson, Maroondah and Upper Yarra Dams and get a modest fine if caught. Our water supply is now viewed as a potential terrorist target and the offence is now considered more serious. Melbourne Water I believe contracts out patrols of these areas and a lot of surveillance takes place.
