Dargo river/Lakes entrance trip.

Just got back from the best fishing trip I’ve ever been on... Left last Sunday to Dargo hoping to catch a few trout and relax. However, the latter was made difficult by the sheer quantity and quality of fish. From the first morning, the fish were on fire, our spinners got crunched in every pool with the majority of fish exceeding a pound. Regardless of the time of day they were in abundance and eager to bite. Every session would yield double figure quantities of fish and in total, over 4 days, my dad and I would have caught a combined total of over 100 trout, including rainbows and browns. My biggest fish at 2lb was caught sight fishing using a worm under a float. I also tried fly fishing for the first time, it was extremely tricky and frustrating, but a few bushes, trees, and obscenities later I managed a beautiful little brown trout on a nymph. With the trout itch now well and truly scratched we decided to try something new and headed to Lakes Entrance in search of a few sand crabs. We bought a crabbing net at the tackle store and headed down a local jetty, after 20 minutes we already had a few sand crabs most of which being a reasonable size, by the evening we had a total of 10, which was plenty for dinner. The next morning we tried to replicate the same success on a different jetty but were unsuccessful and only managed a few small salmon under a float. To try something different I went to a boat dock in one of the estuaries, fully expecting absolutely nothing. However, I spotted a few decent sized fish hanging under a moored boat and so, I cracked open a mussel and put it on a hook before free-lining down beside them. The slack line tightened and after a risky fight around the pylons I hauled out a 32cm bream, soon after I managed another one, slightly larger. After this the fishing went quiet, so I went back to camp for some breakfast. Now with a little more energy I went back out to the dock and free lined another mussel under the jetty, my line soon came tight and I hooked what I thought was another bream, yet a blackish striped fish soon emerged and to my delight it was a luderick- a new species! A great way to finish off the best fishing trip I’ve ever had, made better by the company of my dad who might not have been equally as eager about the fishing, but still had a good time. A great addition to my most cherished memories.

Great trip. Good to see a few bream around the jetties. Trout sound awesome. Never been trout fishing. Maybe I should.

Trout can be a bit tricky at times, but when they are on its awesome. Definitely give it a crack if you have the time.

100 trout in 4 days is a lot!
I use both fly fish and spin for trout. Fly fishing can be tricky but it's fun. Did you use a nymph under an indicator?

Cheers mate. I just used a nymph, we didn’t have any dry flies but it definitely would have helped.
