What is happening with Hazlewood?

If it doesn't fit in a specific freshwater fishing section, post it here

What is happening with Hazlewood?

Post by Sebb » Sun Feb 14, 2021 11:13 am

Does anyone know what is happening with Hazlewood now?
Was stocked with barra, had a lot of tropical fish. Then they shut the power station, heard the water then became too cold and a lot of dead fish.

A few things...

They overstocked the barramundi - they ended up putting 10k in there, but I suspect ~1-2k would have been better.

The barramundi ate all the Cichlids so the Barramundi had no food left.

The barramundi died (mostly).

Rumour has it there are still some in there.

The power station is still running I believe but at a lower capacity maybe... (I stand to be corrected).

That'll definitely kill the barra in winter when water temps drop significantly...

Power station is basically gone. Has been dismantle including the four chimneys. Lake would be the same temperature as any other around.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Do you know if there's still fish in there and worth fishing?

Last I drove past signs are up everywhere saying the lake was closed. Power station is most definitely no longer able to run as its being demolished. As for potential fish in the lake maybe big bass and Carp.

I did some study, Sebb
Hazelwood pondage will not reopen unless the government make Engie reopen it.
The master plan for the area is to turn the opencut pit into 3 lakes.
Lake 1 - productive, lake 2 - environmental & lake 3 - recreational.
The pondage will be drained and repurposed

Ok thanks for the info.

When they're back available for public, assuming the water be too cold for barra. And will be a trout lake.

Still lingering in my head where the fisheries announced the stocking of barra and the locals were happy boosting the local economy as people would come there spending money while fishing etc, only to be closed not too long after, and dead fish, because they shut the power plant. Guessed the didn't talk to each other.

I was so close to hook a barra there, it took the tail of my paddle tail plastic right on my feet but missed the hook.
Kingfish and barra are so hard to tick in my bucket list.
