Duck broken.
Well, after a frustrating few trips, (most of the weekend just gone was spent on the water), I finally broke my early season snapper duck last night. Got the call Monday night, and headed to the skippers house for 4.30pm on Tuesday arvo. Hastings boat ramp was chockas with people coming back in, but 20mins, and we were on the water. We've sounded good fish at the corals last couple of times, so the call was made, and South we headed.
We went back to our old ways, and spent an hour and a half sounding, until Tezz was absolutely happy with what he was seeing. Baits out, (squid), and a very slow pilchards trail went out as well. The first couple of hours were unusual for westernport, with very little tidal flow, and the associated yawing that comes with it. Despite this, a 4kg snapper, and a reasonable gummy shark came a fraction after slack water, on vertical lines.
Constant nibbles and pickers continued until around 10.30pm, when my outer rod just folded over completely, and an absolutely screaming run ensued. Picking up the rod, the tell tale hard headshakes shouted snapper, not gummy as we had briefly thought. After 10 mins, and several more runs, we saw our fish, what a great site, but then the usual big snapper histrionics started, diving under the boat, which lead to me hanging over the side, with the rod in the water almost up to the reel.
Another couple of minutes however, and in the net he went. 2 very happy fishos were all smiles.
Fish went 87cm, and a shade over 7kg, so a new on for me as well. All in all, very, very happy..

Re: Duck broken.
Good thinking, you wouldn't want all the freaks and bream fishos catching on to what you're up to and trying to sneak on board
