I had a rod set up with heavier gear targeting cod,as well as a lighter rod for anything else that might be around.
The second fish of the day was a health Yellowbelly,caught on the lighter rod.
The bites come thick and fast and didn’t stop all day,right up until about 2:30 when we called it a day.
The days highlight was a fish we didn’t land.My mate was flicking spinners about 150 yards downstream when all of a sudden his rod(baited with a scrubbie)buckled over,and the fish headed for the middle section of the river.
It held its position for what seemed like a minute,maybe two,before I managed to inch it back towards the bank.
Slow and cautious was the approach I took to fighting this fish,while I waited for my mate to take over after I managed to alert him he had a big fish on.
I thought I had it in a bit of a holding pattern,before a second screaming run,a headshake,and the hook parted from the leader.
I couldn’t help but respect the fishes strength and fighting abilities.
This was also our third trip in as many months here without encountering any carp.
