MDBA PRESS RELEASE
An interesting MDBA press release - seems some noises are being made. Perhaps self-interest is at work for some?

Re: MDBA PRESS RELEASE
It’s a big political issue because the coalition don’t want to **** off nationals voters in the northern basin and as a result SA farmers get screwed. Apparently the low water levels are terrible for commercial and recreational fishing (not to mention tourism) in the lakes at the Murray mouth too so when dickheads carry on about environmental flows being a waste of water just keep in mind irrigating cotton and rice isn’t the only thing the water is used for.

Re: MDBA PRESS RELEASE
At least the Murray has a reasonable flow all year. What really pisses me off is the Darling when there is not only no flow (like Bourke right now) but also a completely dry river bed for long sections of the river many summers now. A few years back I flew over Southern Queensland and could not believe the number of very large farm dams and the amount of bush being cleared. Just a small amount of that water would keep the Darling flowing and healthy all year.

Re: MDBA PRESS RELEASE
Always been a lot of self interest involved Paul. The idea of returning water to the system and for environmental flows has of course a lot of merit. But the easy approach was taken which in the long run will backfire. I was asked my thoughts and suggested that the best approach was to level with the public on the impacts and compensate people properly. Instead, the Pontius Pilate approach was used where 'the market' (read speculators) was used which has created a lot of resentment.Paulanderson wrote:Perhaps self-interest is at work for some?
Paul, in drought years they should reduce the flows down the Murray - that's part of its natural ecology and no doubt some species are dependent on droughts just as some need the floods. In fact in the 1940's it was identified that the constant flow of water due to irrigation prevented the banks from drying out and hardening. This promoted erosion and silting which has continued to the present day.Paulanderson wrote:At least the Murray has a reasonable flow all year. Totally agree with you on the Darling what has gone on is a f******g disgrace.
4liters the lower lakes were originally estuarine so since the barrages were built the original environment has ceased to exist. So in reality the freshwater at the Murray lakes is less about the environment and more about the competing human interests upstream (cotton etc) and those downstream at the lakes (fishing and tourism), particularly Lake Alexandrina. If you want to restore the ecology of the lakes getting rid of the barrages would be a greater priority - but that aint going to happen due to human interests.4liters wrote:Apparently the low water levels are terrible for commercial and recreational fishing (not to mention tourism) in the lakes at the Murray mouth too so when dickheads carry on about environmental flows being a waste of water just keep in mind irrigating cotton and rice isn’t the only thing the water is used for.

I'm sure the snowy wouldn't mind some extra water down it instead of having it diverted to the Murray...

Did anyone watch the 7.30 Report last night, you can watch the video or read the transcript, Google up 7.30 report. Anyway, large scale rorting was drawn to the attention of the MDBA and they say Qld's problem. Our taxes at work!
