Great advice materepspec wrote:As an outboard mechanic...i cant stress this enough...
IF YOU WANT A SERVICE FOR THE SNAPPER SEASON...RING YOUR DEALER AND BOOK IT IN NOW! DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE NICE WEATHER OR SEPTEMBER TO ROLL AROUND....GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BE WAITING FOR A WHILE TO GET IN! We often have a waiting list of 6-8 weeks by september...so get in now!
Also...go and start your boat if you haven't for a couple of months...turn the steering, charge your batteries...check your trailer...if its outside...make sure there is no water in it. Fuel is crap and if it sits for longer than 3 months...it can start causing issues ie gummed up jets, fuel pumps etc.
4 strokes and DI engines are great...but if they sit around...they can cost thousands to repair.
We had a old boy who had a 50efi fourstroke...the boat sat for 5 years...$2500 before we did the service (fuel vapour chamber, fuel lines, etc)
3 things i can guarantee i will be doing in september/october...
Batteries
Carbies
Steering cables/systems.
Unless your Jesus...you cant walk home

drain any fuel out of it, new plug/s fresh fuel...may (probably will) need carby rebuild...so expect that.Mattblack wrote:Great advice....can I ask what I should do before I start up an old 2 stroke motorbike that's been sitting for a couple of years?repspec wrote:As an outboard mechanic...i cant stress this enough...

Would you bother replacing gearbox oil & brake fluid?repspec wrote:drain any fuel out of it, new plug/s fresh fuel...may (probably will) need carby rebuild...so expect that.Mattblack wrote:Great advice....can I ask what I should do before I start up an old 2 stroke motorbike that's been sitting for a couple of years?repspec wrote:As an outboard mechanic...i cant stress this enough...

Circles. Tight drags, generally have 15 minutes at most of pure mayhem then nothing else.4liters wrote:Are you using circles or j hooks for this over winter? Re: Pre-Season Snapper Preperation
I'd change it all. Gearbox oil, Brake fluid, clean air filter, change plug, drain fuel and put new fuel in. If it doesn't run right you might need to take the carby apart and clean it out. You'll know this buy draining it from the fuel bowl. If it looks gunky then it needs a clean out. What bike have you got?Mattblack wrote:Would you bother replacing gearbox oil & brake fluid?repspec wrote:drain any fuel out of it, new plug/s fresh fuel...may (probably will) need carby rebuild...so expect that.Mattblack wrote:Great advice....can I ask what I should do before I start up an old 2 stroke motorbike that's been sitting for a couple of years?repspec wrote:As an outboard mechanic...i cant stress this enough...

Re: Pre-Season Snapper Preperation
I've got a '76 model Yamaha RD400...It's a nice bike, but it doesn't get ridden enough & garage space is getting tight (I'm thinking about selling it, but it seems to be the only thing I own that isn't going down in value!)Sinsemilla wrote:I'd change it all.
