There are a few strains.Nude up wrote:I thought mahseer rang a bell it’s a fish grows pretty big too. I don’t think you’re travel rod will cut it for them
one in the Himalayan Mountains And a couple in South India
I grew up fishing for them, they are an endangered species now , habitat destruction and poaching.
All though I never caught anything larger than 30lbs, I dont think Ill ever top that PB from when i was a pup.
There are still some places to chase them though for those with time and local knowledge.
When I go there i catch fish upto 10lbs on a 2-4 and Bream lures and get dusted fairly regularly, Open jigheads , mangled hooks.
Below is a clip from the glory days in south india,

Below is a clip from a more recent trip by some anglers in the Himalayas for the northern strain,

I am very passionate about these fish , love em.\
They'll eat dough baits, dead baits, live baits, lures, fly.
This is from the last time I fished for them

Re: Birthday Bass Bash and a Wedding
Congratulations, and thanks for the excellent write-up.
I love American black bass fishing, nothing better than that bucket mouth inhaling a twitching surface lure at first light.
I was very lucky to catch the trifecta of smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass in one day on a trip to Hawaii.
smallmouth fight harder than largemouth but don’t grow as big, I caught a 4kg Florida strain largemouth in Zimbabwe. It grabbed a topwater black rubber frog in 30cm of water through a bed of grass. I’ll never forget that fish bursting through the grass and launching itself into the air to engulf my lure. They are incredible fish to catch.
And mahseer, been on my bucket list since I was 8 years old. Closely related to the barbus species we had in south africa, very powerful. Beautiful and noble fish they are.
