Any quick advice if I do end up heading over there?
I've got 9 foot spin gear for salmon
12 and 10 foot surf rods
What sort of rig, hook size, bait, tide, time of day etc should I go for?
The gear you mention is fine. The main thing is to be prepared for some really strong currents and sidewash. We were using 6oz grapnel sinkers on 50lb leader. Set up same as a snapper rig, running sinker on a 25cm dropper, 50cm to the hook.
We tried to release all our fish so circle hooks were used to prevent gill, or gut hooking. A few fish, like the one pictured, were too exhausted to swim so they were kept and eaten.
You're not casting far, about 25metres, but be prepared for a 200m+ run, and big shark by-catch. I was using a 13' Nitro Assassin and a 12' Snyderglass with ABU 7000's spooled with 80lb braid.
The Snydergalss loaded up.
Bait was 100% squid strips, caught in PPB and frozen for the trip. The squid was cut into a 6" strip and pinned at the very top to the circle hook. We were the only people there to get heaps of fish (30+). Other guys we spoke to were using Pillies, fish slabs, and the usual surf stuff, and only caught the occasional fish. My mate had fished it previously and said PPB squid was the bomb, it sure was!
All Jewies were caught throughout the day, any tide. As soon as night fell they disappeared, to be replaced with rays and sharks.
I hope this helps.
