Ocean flathead
Ocean flathead
Launched from Apollo bay and spent a few hours drifting for ocean flathead. First crack at it in my boat and had a ball with fish on almost every drop. Drifted in 35-40m with flasher style rigs baited with 2yr old freezer burnt calamari that was cut into strips. Managed to jag a bag of flathead between 33-45cm and released a heap of ‘just legals’, few Gurnard perch and gummy pups.
Tried micro jigging over some broken reef but had no interest.
Still some big SBT getting weighed at the gantry. Saw an approx 70kg fish on sat and a 100kg+ on Sunday.

Re: Ocean flathead
Interesting that there's been hardly any mention of those tuna in social media from what I've seen. Those Apollo Bay locals know how to keep their traps shut.

Re: Ocean flathead
I linked a survey done by fisheries a while back that said the same thing. Apollo crew are successfully cagey.

what boat did you get?
cheers
Cheers! Got a Seawasp with 30hp 4 stroke. Upgrading my 25L tank to 45L for a bit more range.
The local tackle shop’s (‘surf-n-fish’) Fb page does a pretty good job of posting significant captures.

Re: Ocean flathead
Try the yamashita tai kabura jigs and zetz slow blatts out there shaz. Keeps you occupied if the bait fishing is slow and they’ll often outfish the baits. I’ve done well on pinkies and all the other reefies.
