Cowes Pier Sat 2nd November 2013
Just got back from a cracking weekend at Phillip Island. I hit the pier with my girlfriend, my sister and nephew, to teach my nephew how to fish. We got to Cowes pier about 7pm and on my first cast in I was on, with a 45cm Mackerel (I think?). As soon as I brought it in it seemed like the whole pier swarmed to my spot. The onslaught continued for the next 3 hours with a total of 13 Mackerel.

Nice report!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're yellowtail scad (a.k.a yakkas) or cowanyoung you've got there?
Sounds like it was a good session, whatever they are

Yes I think they are Cowanyoung, or Jack Mackerel. Thanks for the update.

Nice catch! They are good eating if you bleed them straight after capture. I like them indian style. Gutted, scaled and gilled but left whole and rubbed with a mix of chilli powder, salt, turmeric and shallow fry quickly. Drain on paper towel for a few minutes and serve with some freshly squeezed lime juice! Great bait also but dont bleed as the blood and oils are what attracts the predatory fish. Can be used whole, butterfly fillets(great for wp) or as chunk baits(cutlet). I might have to wander down to stock up the bait freezer.
When I got time,
I wet a line cos Im a junkie,
been fishin since a kid,
I like it cos it numbs me..

We had some last night for dinner Thai style, and yes we bled them straight after capture and that improved the taste a lot. We steamed them and had them with spicy Thai seafood sauce and rice. It tastes similar to some parts of Australian Salmon and Indian and Thai Mackerel. Good eating if bled early.
