Carp preparation
Learnt this at the boat ramp on Sunday.
You will need an old bath or similar
Place carp in bath for 14 days, skimming the surface daily
Feed the carp bread and the muddyness will clear from the carp.
There may be an unpleasant smell, especially if you don't skim the water.
Cook as you like & eat, being weary of the bones .
Or you could just use it as gummy bait, without preparation
Remember "you are never too old to learn useless stuff "

Carp prep. is one thing - but what I want to know is how do people carry them out? I got some serious exercise this afternoon carrying out 4 fish from the Yarra @ 25kg total. They are seriously heavy fish!

Re: Carp preparation
Did you learn it from someone reputable? I know they are eaten in many places, so there must be a way to do it. I had a guy take one I had caught once.
Keith Bell has another way to prepare them, see here: http://www.smh.com.au/environment/anima ... 33b99.html
Problem is you need to have an esky with ice ready to go. A bit hard if you are walking into your favourite fishing hole. And even with this method, most of the fillet is wasted. It is only a couple of pieces on the belly and back that are used.

Re: Carp preparation
there are other ways. the muddy taste comes from a chemical compound called geosmin. geosmin breaks down under acidic conditions, so all you have to do is take a cup of vinegar, dilute it with 2-3 liters of water then soak your cleaned fillets in it for about 10-15 minutes.smile0784 wrote:so i you want to eat carp you have to take them home alive and flush them out over a week?

Re: Carp preparation
One of the best fish Ive ever had.
My gran boiled up chunks of carp and put them in jars with onions curry other spices and vinegar. Let that stand a few weeks and omg.
She’s been dead 22 years & I still remember how great it was.
